Tune-in to a Virtual DNC and Represent Milwaukee in Spirit

Aug. 17 / 2020

This article about the DNC graces the front page of the New York Times today with a quote from our President & CEO Gary Witt. Though it’s exciting to see Milwaukee’s name standing out on a national front page level, it’s disheartening to see the word “Forlorn” come before it. But, it very accurately describes what many Milwaukeeans are feeling this week as they see the DNC go virtual.

The DNC was supposed to be an opportunity for Milwaukee unlike any other the city’s had. It was Milwaukee’s chance to be in the national spotlight, to experience significant financial benefit and to finally break free from Chicago’s shadow and be seen by the nation and world as the vibrant, cultural hub it truly is.

The reality is that we can only do our best. In the middle of a pandemic, we need to support the safest option and put public health at the forefront. If not 2020, we can still have hope for 2024 and in the absence of the “in-person” buzz we wanted for our city, there are ways to support the convention virtually, should you choose to do so. And, don’t forget to support the local bars/restaurants who would be booming right about now. Enjoy your favorite carryout while you’re listening to speeches and tuning into virtual events.

Monday, August 17 @ 8:00 PM CT
The convention kicks off with speeches from an array of representatives including Senator Amy Klobuchar (remember, she introduced the Save Our Stages Act!), Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Representative Gwen Moore (hi, Milwaukee), Senator Bernie Sanders and Former First Lady Michelle Obama.

There is also performances by Leon Bridges and Maggie Rogers (picture of the lovely Maggie Rogers from her performance at Turner Hall included for nostalgia purposes).
