Backstage Bookworms with the Pabst Theater Group
May 27 / 2026
If you’re looking for your next great read, you’re in the right place. At the Pabst Theater Group, our love for great storytelling doesn’t stop when the stage lights go down.
One of our favorite PTG traditions is our book club, where we get together to talk about what we loved, what we didn’t, and how an unhinged plot twist throws us for a loop.
This past year, we’ve been diving into everything from historical fiction and fantasy to comedy and drama, and we wanted to share some of the books that have been on our shelves lately in case you’re looking for inspiration for your own reading goals. Take a look at our staff picks below and let us know which ones you’re picking up next!
1. Shark Heart
Emily Habeck
"You know how people ask if your significant other would still love you if you were a worm? This book is like that, except one person turns into a great white shark. I know it sounds like a joke, but it’s one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever read and I think about it often."
— Brittany Einberger, Director of Marketing

2. A Gentleman in Moscow
Amor Towles
"In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal. He is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors."

4. Still Life
Sarah Winman
"Tuscany, 1944: As Allied troops advance and bombs fall around deserted villages, a young English soldier, Ulysses Temper, finds himself in the wine cellar of a deserted villa. There, he has a chance encounter with Evelyn Skinner, a middle-aged art historian who has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the ruins and recall long-forgotten memories of her own youth. In each other, Ulysses and Evelyn find a kindred spirit amongst the rubble of war-torn Italy, and set off on a course of events that will shape Ulysses's life for the next four decades."

7. Everything Is Tuberculosis
John Green
"New Mexico. Adirondack chairs. Cowboy hats. Somehow, everything really is tuberculosis—and John Green explains it all in a way that makes you feel both smart and not doomed.
PS: This was the most unanimously agreed-upon excellent book and the most attended meeting in PTGBC history. Not to brag."

8. The Bewitching
Silvia Moreno-Garcia
"A mix of creepy family history and a mystery told across three timelines and three generations of women. One of my favorite parts was how it highlights Mexican culture and traditions—because I, too, was cleansed by an egg to absorb and release negative energy. It’s a real thing."
— LuzElena Hernandez, Marketing Coordinator
