Event Details
If you like Toro y Moi, BADBADNOTGOOD, Still Woozy...
After meeting serendipitously at Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Paul Cherry and The Mattson 2 kept in touch and decided to collaborate in the studio and on the road together.... and now they're thrilled to bring you this Head 2 Head ephemeral music experience, 4 the heads to the midwest and beyond!!
--------
The Mattson 2’s recent output includes the celebratory, disco splashed Toro Y Moi single "Millennium" which appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The twin brothers cameoed in the joints video as grumpy orderlies in a mental ward high-jacking instruments from Chaz Bear’s bandmates. Amongst collabs w/ Ray Barbee, Tommy Guerrero, Farmer Dave (of Kurt Vile), and Money Mark (of Beastie Boys), they released Star Stuff in 2017 with Chaz Bear (FKA Chaz Bundick, AKA Toro Y Moi) — #1 on Billboard contemp. jazz charts — and reinterpreted Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme.
Paul Cherry began his musical journey in a small suburb of Detroit, playing banjo and guitar into his teenage years. Focused sharply on teaching himself the piano by playing through the jazz standards of The Real Book, jazz chords and melodies laid the foundation of Cherry’s signature sound, at times cross referencing more modern takes on pop jazz from Michael Franks, Paul McCartney, Jeff Lorber, and Donald Fagen. Paul Cherry’s music evokes a love for sunny ‘70s and ‘80s grooves. Buried beneath cynicism and introspection is a winking optimism. The juxtapositions of Cherry’s warm instrumentation and the apathetic lyrics are an exercise in subversion. “I’m so ready to have more fun with my life,” Cherry sings over a syncopated bassline, performed by bassist and collaborator Joseph Faught, convinces us that he’s more than ready - He’s made it.
